July - 2017
Can you believe it's been a year? Well you better.
I want to thank everyone for not only subscribing but all the feedback you've offered as well. I'm not sure exactly where Cafuné Cafe is going but I've got a few new ideas and plans for the coming year. I hope you continue to find value in these playlists.
The artist I'd like to highlight this month is Stanton Moore. Stanton has already solidified himself as a legend of New Orleans jazz drumming. He's the backbone of Galactic, the well known modern NOLA jazz outfit, in addition to various side and solo projects. Included in the playlist is Night People featuring Maceo Parker and Cyril Neville. But what you really need to know is the album this track belongs to is a tribute to an even bigger legend, Allen Toussaint who passed away suddenly in November of 2015.
During my last visit to New Orleans in 2010, I saw Allen driving himself down the street in his gold Rolls. While stopped at a light, he rolled down his window and waved to my friends and I like we were old friends. As a former Los Angeleno more used to seeing celebrities annoyed by anyone's attention, this was a bit surreal. But if you've been to the Crescent City, you know that kind of friendliness is not uncommon. That moment showed how much Allen embodied NOLA's spirit.
So Stanton and friends decided to dedicate this album to him and I think it's great. In addition to an impressive collection of performances, the mix and sound quality is high.
Enjoy 45 minutes of good music.
